In 1740 Admiral Edward Vernon enforced a reduction in the strength of the British Navy's rum ration, passing an order that his sailors' rum be diluted with water.

When his men complained about their new watered-down supply, Vernon - fondly known as 'Old Grog' - suggested the addition of limes and sugar to make the liquid more palatable.

It is in honour of this unlikely mixologist that Old J Spiced Rum was born.
